Would you recommend this for 5/16 ID hose or should I get the 3/8" disconnects for a tighter fit on 5/16" hose? And what's the max OD of the barb?

Without a micrometer, I would say the flare out on the barb is at about 7/16 OD. The 5/16" ID hose should be just fine. These hold tight.
