i think mine is faulty, the handle free spins, but very occasionally locks. any one else find this?

If my example's anything to go by, the handle should switch from a very solid lock-up to freely spinning after the catch/clutch is pressed just over half way down. There's a definite click if it's under load at the time. but no other noise or resistance once spinning or after release. The catch should be held in the upwards, 90-degreee, position by spring pressure.

I think mine might be faulty. When the unlock button is pressed, the handle can’t always be rotated forwards, only backwards. Is this normal?

As far as I am aware - There isn't one... you can always check SMALLRIG website! ...if they have one in their arsenal - it would be on their website.

Does this handle allow the screen on an a7s iii to flip out, or does it block it?

This handle has to be mounted onto Camera cage ..and once is mounted - it will be approx. 2 inches away from the edge of the camera and screen - therefore it should NOT abstract your flip screen! I bought one for my A7RIII and it's FANTASTIC! Great Finish and High-Quality construction - Only thing I would ask for is that perhaps angle adjustment of the handle could be finer - as a micro-adjustment... it IS good as it is - but in my opinion - it could be improved... than - it would be absolutely 100% perfect!
