The celebrated survey of female Abstract Expressionist artists revealing the richness and lasting influence of their work The artists Jay DeFeo, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and many other women played major roles in the development of Abstract Expressionism, which flourished in New York and San Francisco in the 1940s and 1950s and has been recognized as the first fully American modern art movement. Though the contributions of these women were central to American art of the twentieth century, their work has not received the same critical attention as that of their male counterparts. Women of Abstract Expressionism is a long-overdue survey. Lavishly illustrated with full-color plates emphasizing the expressive freedom of direct gesture and process at the core of the movement, this book features biographies of more than forty artists, offering insight into their lives and work. Essays by noted scholars explore the techniques, concerns, and legacies of women in Abstract Expressionism, shedding light on their unique experiences. This groundbreaking book reveals the richness of the careers of these important artists and offers keen new reflections on their work and the movement as a whole. Review: Beautiful Historic Book - This is a bit pricey but beautiful book. The photos are crisp and large. The section where each artist was given a full page—photographed with her art and in her studio is the best part. It’s a very comprehensive survey of women abstract artists. Do not hesitate to buy this book. A must have for every serious artist. You won’t regret spending the money.

An essential book for enthusiasts of art history.
This book is a gem! After reading Mary Gabriel’s Ninth Street Women I knew I needed to add Women of Abstract Expressionism to my library. It is filled with beautiful color plates and includes a thorough chronology detailed with photographs. My favorite section of the book was an unexpected surprise, selected biographies of lesser known artists. I’ve used this section as a source for continued additions to my reading wish list.

About Time ,But Still Not Enough
this is a very informative catalog. it serves to set right the missing female additions of Abstract Expressionism. It does this I believe, but it could have said more about the artists later working life. the only qualm with the book I have is the second rather wordy art forum styled piece. it may have been well meaning to art historians and I do not believe in dummying down, but this was way off base for anyone that may be a layman of sorts trying to learn. Now on to the work. Of course i wish there were more pictures, of the work and of the artists, of the time. The differences in work and sexual politics between East and West may have made a very strong photographic essay since it was referred to many times in the book. Over all, I loved the book.

Vibrant
We all know women are vibrant and deeply feeling. This book shows women doing just that and usually from the same places as men. To have a book that brings them to the forefront as artists in their own right is so wonderful to me. I found myself distracted by the images to the point that I had to make myself read this rich history. It's well worth any investment.

It was hard getting tracking info.
The book is good. The the packaging was too lightweight for the weight of this book. A corner broke through cardboard causing small damage to a corner.

ontdekking
Het zijn niet altijd de bekende artiesten die kunst maken. Een verademing , dit boek en dan nog prachtig uitgegeven.

Beautiful
This is a beautiful book although the color(print quality )of some of the reproductions is not good. The main strength of the book lies in the fact that it assembles a lot of important works of some great women artits. The photos are very large which is very important for this kind of books. Hope the print quality would have been better.

Juste magnifique.
L'expressionnisme abstrait masculin, beaucoup trop torturé et inutilement compliqué, devrait s'inspirer des ces merveilleuses créations féminines. Juste magnifique. C'est de l'oxygène pour l'intellect et un frissonnement d'émotion
