Q: can this be player 1.

Once you put the batteries in and power on your Wii/Wii U then yes it can be, or if u can have up to 4 remotes turned on from player 1-4 in whichever order there turned on.

Q: Why did it come in a plain white box and not original Nintendo packaging? It says new, but whos to say.

No idea unless the seller bought them in bulk and packaged them individually...I only know that the one I bought works perfect and that's all that matters to me. Box went in the garbage anyway.

most wii games need motion plus , so this might not work for some wii games but the controller does works on the wiiu console. it depends on the game
