Before they were brothers, they were babies...
You know, now that I really think about it, I really do believe this was my first ever Mario game I owned. I had it once a long long time ago for the Game Boy Advance, and I loved it so. I eventually lost it, and recently decided I just had to buy it again to relive the classic prequel to the Super Mario Brothers classic tale/game. You will not be disappointed, however my two complaints would be as follows; 1 - To short. While the game boasts the usual 8 stages with several levels per stage, as well as bonus stages and extra content, it still feels like it isn't enough of this world to play and explore in! Luckily this was corrected by creating sequels to this particular prequel, creating it's own little series in the Mario overworld. 2 - Slightly easy. Let's face it, most Mario 2D side scrolling games don't get all that complicated for the most part. Coming in to play with my first reason, it is fairly easy to sweep through the game and get to the end. But you know what, that's the fun part! Because this is a classic and a must own for any Mario fan in my opinion. The story, for one, is excellent; Diving deep into the lore of the Mushroom Kingdom, we see our two heroes as babies being carried by the stork in little white bundles heading towards their parents house. Suddenly, Kamek the Magikoopa swoops down and kidnaps baby Luigi and the stork, while sending Mario plummeting to the ocean below. However, he lands instead on a mysterious island inhabited by Yoshi's, and when Mario lands on one of their backs with a map leading to baby Bowser's castle, the Yoshi's decide to embark on a quest to reunite the twins and defeat the Koopas... For the 'very first time!' I won't give anymore away, but the game play is excellent and pretty easy to get down while setting a unique difference between other installments in the series while retaining the same game play we know and love... Think of it like playing Super Mario World, but always riding Yoshi's with even more powers. Yeah, it's that cool. 9/10

An eight-year-old's review
I personally think this game is too hard. Well, that doesn't stop me from playing it. Well, let's face it. World 4 is about a gigantic monster that is a helper. And believe me, that is nearly impossible, in my opinion. Don't take my word for it though. This guy snatches one of the Mario Brothers but forgets the other one. The other Mario falls from the sky onto the green Yoshi's back. Then, a runaway begins. As the Yoshis team up and make an obstacle course to carry Baby Mario on their backs, "Watch Out Below" is my second favorite scene. But, I hold my temper when it gets too hard. I say I won't let my temper go wild, even if this game is a little hard. After all, it is one of the hardest Mario games. On the fourth world, bursting hot lava is coming out and there are little lines that you can jump onto and stay there. But, some of the lines move. And when the giant monster comes, guess who's excited? Me! Some of the levels are a snap and others, well, take nearly two days. Thank goodness for my friend, Joey, at Kids Club. He taught me how to play the game. You can also hop on donuts, and the donuts fall down. So, when you play, I don't want you to get frustrated. You can eat enemies and make eggs, hop over and kill monsters, and it would be a great experience for you. There are also cute little baby sounds. But, if you get caught by a monster, then Baby Mario goes up in a bubble, and you have ten seconds to grab him. But, there are some things that make you get twenty seconds to grab him. But, this time you don't control the characters. They control you, if you know what I'm saying. Killing the big gigantic monster on the front cover is easy. You can just make one of those eggs and throw it at him. But, he might eat you up. Of course, the monster you see on the front cover isn't always that big. He gets big a few minutes later. But, the cover of the game doesn't exactly look the same as the characters in the game. The monster is blue on the cover of the game, and he is red in the game. Don't you think that's strange? Yoshi has an excellent jump. Jumping over the monster will be easy. But, beware of the monster. I recommend this game for everybody!

One of the greatest platformers of all time
1995 seemed to be a great year for a gamer. The Donkey Kong Country series went portable with DK Land, Rayman was a surprise full of perfection, and Vectorman appealed to Sega Genesis players with its colorful pre-rendered graphics that DKC had done. All of these games were great, but Yoshi's Island was the best of all. While Rayman would have been my favorite game of all time, it suffered from the most extreme difficulty EVER. Yoshi's Island has amazing graphics, catchy sound/music, awesome gameplay, AND forgiving difficulty alike. This is not the average Mario game, but rather is it what fans would call a Yoshi game, since it plays a lot differently. As Yoshi, you romp through levels like usual, but now you can throw eggs at enemies, as well as eat enemies to make eggs. There is also a huge variety of obstacles, like boulders, loads of unique platforms, collectible flowers, the enemies doing all kinds of stuff, etc, etc. But the thing is: It is all well-crafted and carefully put together for one of the ultimate platforming experiences. Don't believe me? Go on some video websites and watch some gameplay footage. One look and you'll agree that it looks beyond terrific. There are also some bonuses in the game to help you on your quest to defeat the evil Bowser Jr. For example, there are small houses that you may possibly find in a level (It requires a key, though). Once you are able to enter in, you must compete with an enemy in a certain challenge (Collect most coins, Pop most balloons, etc). There's also bonus challenges when the goal chooses a flower you had collected (In a roulette-like way). Overall, it's definitely one of the greatest platformers I have ever played. I may prefer Super Mario World as the best of all, but this game certainly comes close to winning that title. Oh, yeah. The GBA remake of Mario Bros contained in this cartridge rocks, too.

Yoshi's Island, an understated gem.
Before I ordered this game, I had heard good things, though it was not nearly as publicized as other Mario games. I figured it might not be as good as other Mario games since it was less famous, but it might at least be worth a shot. Wow! This game was amazing. I would go so far as to say that it is one of the best platformers of all time. I still view other platformers, notably the Donkey Kong Country series, with a bit more reverence, but this largely has to do with the fact that I played them during my oh-so-impressionable childhood. First off, this game is long. There are six worlds with 8 levels each. That's quite a bit of playtime. I powered through in about 3 days, but that's mainly because i couldn't put it down. Levels can be rather non-linear was well; sometimes you can be searching an area a long time trying to find a key to a door or a way to get to the exit. Also, there are so many things yoshi can do that it is just so fun to play around with. He can jump on enemies, swallow them, turn them into eggs and shoot them, crush them with a boulder, and the list goes on. I lastly want to commend the style and graphics of this game. The story-book look is cute and charming. The way everything moves and interacts with the environment, it all just fits together so well. This game is 9 years old now, 16 if you go back to its SNES release, but it still holds up as an amazing games even by today's standards. If for any reason you have a GBA and are still looking for any good games, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS!

Good game. Cartridge was in poor condition
Hardly connects to the gameboy. At times it will also not stay connected. When it does work the game is a fun classic.

This is NOT a "kiddie" game!
At first glance, this might look like a little kid game, but it is VERY challenging! It's almost impossible to get 100% in every single level without looking at a guide (or searching YouTube). But anyway, let me talk about the service. The game came in in just about three days in which I was very surprised and pleased. But when I put the game in my GBA, it didn't work. I e-mailed customer service and quickly got a response. The guy was very helpful and explained that the cartridge was probably just dirty and sent me a link to a YouTube video on how to safely clean game cartridges and after I cleaned the cartridge it's worked like new! Now, on to the game. This game is awesome. For those of you who have played Super Mario World, you will notice that Yoshi has a whole bunch of other abilities in this sequel/prequel. Yoshi can now aim his tongue up instead of just which ever way you are facing. And, eating most most enemies doesn't just get them out of your way, once eating an enemy, Yoshi will turn it into an egg and then you can use the egg like a projectile! There are also some wacky abilities Yoshi can obtain too. Like transforming into a little helicopter to get across wide endless pits. This game was also actually the first Mario game to introduce Yoshi's flutter jump. Plus, beside Yoshi's new abilities, this game also has amazing level design as good, or if not better, than it's predecessor. This game is very well worth $15 and for those of you who own a 3DS, this game is available for download on the Nintendo e-Shop. Take my advice and GET IT!!

A Fantastic Game
This game is so much fun! I used to play Yoshi's Island on the SNES and was heartbroken when our console stopped working, so when I discovered that the title had been remade for the GBA, I was overjoyed. It's a faithful remake that doesn't change any of the original content -- the music is just as delightful as I remember and the buttons are perfect. If you enjoy platform games, I highly recommend this title.
