Bamboo Shrimp, also known as Singapore Flower Shrimp, are a truly amazing and fascinating species due to their lively personalities and their ability to quickly change color based on their mood and/or environment. Their colors tend to range from tan to dark brown, but once they become comfortable in their surroundings, they often turn a vibrant red or a beautiful cerulean blue! These big shrimp are one of the largest freshwater shrimp, ranging in length from 1.5 to 3.5 inches. These shrimp are known to reproduce only in saltwater, and this is almost always the case. They are easy to keep in a home freshwater aquarium, as no special equipment is needed for them to flourish. Bamboo Shrimp are nice and peaceful and perfect to keep with almost any other critters in your aquarium, as long as the others are not aggressive towards them. A crayfish (freshwater lobster), such as the Cherax or Clarkii variety, may be a danger to shrimp and should be kept in a separate tank. A Bamboo Shrimp can be kept by itself, but also does well in groups. Bamboo shrimp are omnivorous filter feeders and scavengers. Like dwarf shrimp, they eat leftover fish food, and their diet can include supplements like protein rich invertebrate pellet food and wafers. As with all shrimp, Bamboo Shrimp do best in tanks with live s (such as willow moss or anubias) and another fixture that provides cover. They can often be found near the back of the tank’s landscape, hanging out on siphon tubes for aquarium pumps, a powerhead or other circulation device, or other objects that allow them to perch while feeding.
