It's like magic - but not for vegetarians
Be warned that if you are vegetarian, Dr Atkins says his diet would be too boring because you would have insufficient choice of protein foods. But if you're not, it's brilliant, and it really does reduce weight FAST with no hunger after the first few days. And despite what the scaremongers say, it *does* include green veg, and after the first fortnight it includes a wide range of veg and some fruit and is perfectly well balanced. Others have come along afterwards and you may find them presented in a way you like better: e.g. Nerys and India's Idiot Proof Diet is great and has a supportive forum pig2twig, which helps a lot. Or the Stone Age Diet. Atkins gives a lot of science information, and you may like that, or not. Many have read Atkins and worked out their own diet based on his theory: break your addiction to carbs and your insulin levels settle down and release you from hunger. And the weight drops off. And he also recommends you eat fresh food, not the processed stuff that is ruining the health of the western world. It's like magic, and you almost want to run about converting other fatties who are struggling with the establishment's insistence that we should all eat brown bread and potatoes to lose weight. But the research is starting to show that Atkins was right. And thousands of people will tell you it worked for them. He's The KING.

A fantastic - scientifically literate book.
Used this book as the basis for a change of diet from mainly carbohydrates to reduced carbohydrates. The result was guaranteed weight loss and big improvements in blood fat figures - especially Triglycerides - the blood fat cited in the book as mostly responsible for heart disease. The late Dr. Atkins - a heart surgeon - was vilified by the MSM when he advocated reducing carbs - despite his diet plan being supported by scientific peers and showing clear beneficial results. Major junk food manufacturers had a lot to lose if his diet plan gained traction. There are fad diets all over the place - but this isn't one and stands out due to the medical rigour behind it. Many other diets are now emulating the Dr. Atkins approach. Physicians on non MSM outlets such as utube are advocating a low carb or Keto diet as an antidote to diabetes - obesity and heart disease. This book is outstanding and well ahead of its time as it was written around 30 years ago. Anyone seeking to lose weight and become healthy without going on a spartan unfulfilling calorie controlled diet will not go wrong with this book. Very highly recommended.

Great book, but some of the weight loss mechanics still not understood properly or explained by the authors
This is a great book for anyone serious about understanding the body's fat burning processes and why the diet works so well. It's simple really - the more carbs you eat, the less your body burns fat, because carbs are so much easier for the body to digest. By restricting the carb intake to fresh low carb but high nutrient vegetables (and removing all sugar) the body is forced to create energy from mobilising body fat because it's easier to do this than try and digest the protein you're eating. However 'Dr Atkins' (well his team since his death) still doesn't fully understand or explain the mechanics of fat burning while in ketosis. For example, in one of the clinical studies cited (Kekwick and Pawan?), Dr A says that the biggest weight loss experienced was in the trial group eating a diet comprising 90% fat. Well of course they would, because a diet that high in fat and that low in protein would forced the body to strip muscle to provide the protein for cell replacement! For the novice, it is a fascinating read which has A HUGE AMOUNT TO THINK ON. Why on earth are doctors 'prescribing' overweight diabetics a diet low in fat but still including grains and sugars and giving them pills, when Atkins Induction protocol (the most stringent level) stabilises blood sugar really well and puts the body into a position where it has to burn fat for energy? I can say this as someone who successfully used Atkins to lose nearly 3 stone and in the process become a whole lot healthier.

At Last.......a Diet that really works!!
I bought the book and followed it to the letter. I lost 9lb in the first two weeks "Induction" part of the diet and now I am on the "Ongoing Weight Loss" part, I am continuing to lose weight steadily. In four weeks, I have lost 1 stone in weight! I have been plump/overweight for the last 11 years and put it down to middle-age. I've tried all sorts of diets and always got bored and hungry and consequently returned to my unhealthy way of eating, Dr. Atkins has changed the way that I see food. I have been eating "like a King" for four weeks and have not felt hungry once! The weight is just dropping off and I feel so full of energy and 10 years younger. I used to suffer with various digestive ailments and always felt bloated. Now I feel so much better and all my ailments have disappeared. This is not such much a diet, more a way of life. I know that I can follow this way of eating for the rest of my life....it really isn't difficult and the whole thing makes so much sense. It's like waking up one morning a completely different person...and I like who I have become. Thankyou Dr. Atkins for giving me another chance to be slim and healthy. I recommend this book and this diet to all those who have tried everything and have failed miserably. You too could be eating steak with roquefort sauce, followed by strawberries and cream. Just get this book!

I don't call this a diet, I call it a lifestyle. Both my wife and I have lost 40 pounds in just over 1/2 year. And we've never been hungry. Seriously, there are always low carb foods that you can snack on, and keep the weight loss going. Trying to count calories is, to me, a lot of work, and I was always hungry. This works. We'll keep going, as we both want to lose another 15-20 pounds. We've changed the way we eat (very small amounts of carbs) so now it's easy for us to continue. As we reach our target weights, we can start adding a few carbs back in again. Highly recommend!!
