desertcart.com: Literary Witches: A Celebration of Magical Women Writers: 9781580056731: Kitaiskaia, Taisia, Horan, Katy: Books Review: Lovely poetry and illustrations with an edge... - This book features lovely poetry and illustrations about a comprehensive, global list of important female authors. It is a beautifully charming book with a sharp edge and I especially loved how the style of the poetry and the art complemented each other. However, I will say that the only thing I didn't love about the book was the layout. It is put together a bit more like a gift book--I assume for marketability purposes--when it's really a book of poetry and art in many ways and some of the layout distracts from the attention on the content. Don't let that stop you from buying this book though. It's really a treasure and a beautiful way of discovering amazing women writers that you may not already know about! Review: Illuminating, musical, magical - A wonderful, lyrical introduction to so many female authors I have never heard of! Taisia’s poetry is a marvel. It evokes such delicious, textured images. A must read for all female artists, and women you have yet to tap their artistic potential. Katys art is so visceral and original. There are so many wonderful details in each portrait that capture the inner workings of her subjects. They are biting and soft all at the same time. You ladies are brilliant!

An excellent introduction to the magical and fantastical offerings of a variety of female authors. From some of the most well-known and celebrated writers of our time (eg. Toni Morrison) to new-to-me discoveries, Kitaiskaia weaves together tasty morsels, leaving you curious and wanting more. Thankfully, she generously offers recommended readings with each feature. Horan's grasp of all things spooky and dreamy is clear in her wonderful illustrations which set the perfect mood (think a refined Edward Gorey). They are digestible enough to lazily peruse, but complex enough to go back and explore for hidden gems and symbols again and again. Highly recommend this cover to cover delight!

Good Primer
This is a quick snapshot of the bios of some influential and empowering female authors. I mostly bought it to add extra layers to working with the Literary Witches Oracle deck. Some of the information is the same as the accompanying guidebook but it does more into the art of the cards and has suggested reading for each author. It is a solid starting point. Just don't go in expecting a deep dive.

The paintings were done with palatable love and admiration for each literary witch
What could be an extremely difficult undertaking is masterfully done here. The balance beam of 'informational' and 'poetic' is masterfully danced upon with broomstick in hand. The illustrations of each author steal the show. The paintings were done with palatable love and admiration for each literary witch. The attention to detail from cover to cover help make for a super-interesting read!

An enchanting, beautifully illustrated book that pays homage to the great women of literature. "Literary Witches" is structured around two-page spreads that pair illustrations with poetic introductions to a "witchy" writer. The book includes favorite writers of mine like Shirley Jackson and Emily Dickinson, but I also learned about writers I hadn't heard of before like Yumiko Kurahashi and Alejandra Pizarnik (the book is international in its scope and includes a lot of great writers of color). This would be a great gift for budding authors & recent graduates, poetry lovers, any woman who needs a reminder of her inner strength, and many more!

Cool read
I've been enjoying reading about the different authors. I bought this alongside the Oracle deck to help me understand them better. It's been wonderful.

eh
I bought the oracle cards that go with this, and wanted to purchase the book for more insight. I thought there would be a lot more information about the women in the book, but really, it's the same information as what you find in the guidebook for the oracle deck. The artwork is beautiful, but if you have the cards, I'd recommend not purchasing this.

I had no idea how this book would present the different writers. I guess one can grasp the depiction of each if one knows the writers work beforehand.

I love the way each writer is described in a poetic manner, with a vivid dramatic portrait of them that makes them appear as magical sirens or literary goddesses. Absolutely LOVE. There is an Oracle deck based on this book, but please be aware that this book is not a “guidebook” for the Oracle, in that it does not contain divinatory meanings to help you interpret the cards, since the book was created BEFORE the cards. I’ve seen a few unboxing videos of the deck and chuckled to myself as people struggled to understand this, however, the book stands alone and truly shines in its own right, so please do not judge the book and Oracle in relation to each other, but rather, use them to complement each other creatively and poetically... allow the creative genius of these women to inspire you to flex your own imagination, you might just surprise yourself.

I loved this book and now have 2 copies - one to lend to others. It is full of wonderful insightful and magical snippets and glorious illustrations of great women writers - beautiful illustrations and very clever, and most extraordinary and inspiring paragraphs on each of them. How great to sit down and browse for an hour or 5 minutes with this book!
